Service Description

In Hong Kong’s high-pressure educational landscape, children and teenagers face intense academic demands, excessive screen time, and limited opportunities for hands-on, physical creation. Project-Based Learning (PBL) Woodwork & Restoration Classes for Youth provide a therapeutic, screen-free antidote where students transition from passive consumers to active makers. Operating out of our Mui Wo studio, these self-paced, project-based sessions teach real-world tool safety, traditional joinery, timber mechanics, and museum-grade restoration. Guided by expert instructors at low supervision ratios, young makers build physical confidence, spatial reasoning, emotional regulation, and practical life skills. Whether a student wants to build a custom desk, shelves, toys or restore a worn family chair, our curriculum uses hands-on craft to teach resilience, normalise failure as a natural step in learning, and foster self-reliance. Program Structure & Flexible Pass System To accommodate busy calendars PBL classes run on a Flexible Hourly Credit Pass System rather than rigid weekly slots. How the Pass System Works: 1 credit = 1 hour of class Flexible Booking Blocks: Sessions are booked in 2-hour blocks (up to 5 hours maximum per session), matching how youth engage most effectively with hands-on projects. Self-Scheduled Workbench Slots: Parents and students self-schedule studio timeslots via our website or Whatsapp. Core Curricula Options Students can choose between two distinct project pathways or combine elements of both using their pass credits: Pathway 1: Custom Woodwork Builds Project Scope: Designing and constructing functional items from raw timber (e.g., small stools, boxes, shelving, desk lamps, or toolboxes). Skills Developed: Precision measuring and marking, hand-sawing with Japanese pull-saws, chisel joinery, drilling, edge beveling, and hand-applying child-safe, organic wax/oil finishes. Educational Anchor: Practical STEM application, physical geometry, spatial reasoning, and 3D design logic. Pathway 2: Upcycling & Furniture Restoration Project Scope: Repairing, refinishing, and transforming broken, vintage, or discarded wooden furniture and decor. Skills Developed: Structural joint repair using dowels and wood glue, surface stripping, wood filling, progressive hand sanding, custom staining, and eco-friendly painting. Educational Anchor: Environmental stewardship, sustainability, valuing longevity over fast-consumerism, and problem-solving.
